Group Exhibition: Tastes Like Sunshine @ The Museum of Brisbane

Tastes like Sunshine explores the flavoursome side of our city’s character and reveals its rich and evolving food story through contemporary art, personal stories and historical documents, and images .

Featuring exciting new artwork and installations by acclaimed artists Elizabeth Willing, Sean Rafferty and Carol McGregor, Tastes like Sunshine engages all five senses in an interactive experience that will challenge your pre-existing notions of food.

How we engage with food is a reflection of our culture, background and aspirations. Our region’s Aboriginal food culture and the influence of immigration have impacted not just our city’s food palate, but how we live. This mouth-watering exhibition will explore the rich history of our city’s iconic produce markets, Brisbane’s pivotal role in launching the state’s sugar industry, and how the introduction of new crops had domestic cookers experimenting with new methods and creations.

Solo Exhibition: On the nature of the Familiar @ WAG

  • Woolloongabba Art Gallery (map)

On the nature of the Familiar explores society’s physical and ideological connection to nature within an urban, domestic context. By taking organic and inorganic waste objects from homes, and re-presenting them with common household scenes, the work seeks to question where ‘nature’ meaningfully resides. While the natural world is closed off behind doors, curtains and fences, and representations of nature are brought into the home through adornments and motifs, concepts of ‘nature’ are hybridised, abstracted and dislocated from the physical realities of an impacted and disappearing natural environment.

Group Exhibition: Handled with Care

  • Woolloongabba Art Gallery (map)

This exhibition is based on a research project* titled “Handled with care: Developing the paradigm of ‘a culture of repair and share’ in Brisbane, Queensland”, which exists in a context that has been established and advanced in the past three decades, the interdisciplinary field of sustainable studies, including environmental sciences, humanities and design. The project’s objective has been to contribute to the sustainable studies field, and specifically, to waste management practices by making visible the impact of repair and sharing via identifying and mapping the yet to be discovered ‘culture of repair and share’ in Brisbane’s CBD. For its fulfilment, a digital platform, an App and a blog were created, grounded in research findings that revealed the facilities, practices and activities that support a sustainable urban living of mending the ‘broken’ and sharing space, resources, skills and time. Future aims of this project include the promotion of citizens’ engagement with repairing and sharing via skill and repair workshops, shared physical and urban spaces, exchange of services, and tool and appliance libraries.

Opening night Friday 20th March 6-9pm.
